Learning-Driven Schools: A Practical Guide for Teachers And Principals

Learning-Driven Schools: A Practical Guide for Teachers And Principals

Many teachers are trained to approach their work with a set of teaching strategies and lessons that changes little over time. Because they are focused on how they teach, rather than on how their students learn, they use the same techniques day after day, making no adjustments for students' different learning needs.
In Learning-Driven Schools: A Practical Guide for Teachers and Principals, Barry Beers shows how teachers can plan, teach, and assess for student learning—and how principals can support teachers in their efforts. The book includes
* An overview of the research on knowledge retention;
* Real-life samples of lesson plans that address state and local standards;
* Strategies on accurately assessing student learning;
* Advice for teachers on addressing the needs of struggling, intermediate, and advanced students at the same time; and
* Advice for administrators on conducting effective classroom observations.
A rallying cry and how-to guide rolled into one, this book is an invaluable resource for anyone passionate about learning. Having served as a veteran teacher and principal himself, Barry Beers brings his own experience and understanding to bear on the essential task of ensuring that student learning remains the clear focus of our schools.

1977 Pontiac Grand Prix

My 1st trip 2 "Height & Ashbury Street" in San Francisco with my Cousin (Maria B.). We spent a lil' bit of time in GOLDEN GATE PARK, Shoped a lil' & eat some mexican food. I wish she lived closer, so that we could hang out all the time. She got behind the wheel of my VICIOUS-V and loved the ride. Maria likes these full-sived vintage personal luxary cars from the 70's. Maria has a 80's style oldsmobile cutlass. If i got a cutlass it'll have to be a 70-72 one. I have an OLDSMOBILE engin under my hood of the VICIOUS-V though. If your Grand Prix was made in CALIFORNIA in 1977, then it came with an OLD's engin, b/c of the HIGH emmishons standards of the late 70's. When Maria comes back to CALI, she'll get to drive my next old school car that i just bought... A "1976 Mercury COUGAR RX-7". GRRRRRRRRRR... ... ...

The Isaac Newton School of Driving: Physics and Your Car

For some people, driving is an art; for others, it's a science. At the Isaac Newton School of Driving, though, every car is a laboratory on wheels and every drive an exciting journey into the world of physics. As explained by renowned science writer and physics professor Barry Parker—whose father was a car mechanic and garage owner—almost every aspect of driving involves physics. A car's performance and handling relies on fundamental concepts such as force, momentum, and energy. Its ignition system depends on the principles of electricity and magnetism. Braking relies on friction—yet another basic scientific concept—and if the brakes fail, the resulting damage, too, can be predicted using physics.
Parker's first lesson describes the basic physics of driving: speed and acceleration; why you get thrown forward while braking or outward while turning; and why car advertisements boast about horsepower and torque. He goes on to discuss the thermodynamics of engines, and how they can be more fuel efficient; and what friction and traction are and how they keep a car's tires on the road, whether it's dry, wet, or icy. He also describes how simple laws of physics enable scientists to design aerodynamic cars and high-tech steering systems. Parker then explores the high-performance physics of auto racing, outlines how traffic accidents are reconstructed by police, uses chaos theory to explain why traffic jams happen, and describes what cars of the future might look like. Whether you drive a Pacer or a Porsche, The Isaac Newton School of Driving offers better—and better-informed—driving through physics.
